Welcome to the Triangle Traffic Network’s Commuter Scout sign-up page.

The Triangle Traffic Network is a rush-hour radio station traffic reporting organization, providing current Triangle Traffic information to hundreds of thousands of Triangle commuters every week.  Recent studies have shown that over 50% of Triangle commuting time is spent in congested conditions.

Reports currently are broadcast on 13 Triangle radio stations, during weekday morning and afternoon drive time hours.

Among the network’s numerous traffic resources are hundreds of commuters (“Commuter Scouts”), who are in the middle of traffic every morning and afternoon, and are paid to report their traffic experiences on their way to and from work.

The ideal candidate for a commuter scout
- is reliable
- normally drives to and from work in, from, to, or through the Triangle
- normally commutes at least 18 weekdays per month
- normally commutes during rush hours (6am-9am and 3:30pm-6:30pm)
- commutes on high volume Triangle roads
- has a wireless phone in service, turned on during commutes
- is willing to call in information at least once during each commute

Commuter scouts call the traffic hotline, and tell reporters’ assistants about the traffic conditions they are experiencing. The assistants may ask a question or two to help clarify the information, and the typical call takes about 15-seconds.

Interested commuters complete the inquiry form below, and are then sent applications to complete. Once applications are returned, selections are made according to the applicant’s travel schedules and routes. Once accepted, commuter scouts are given instructions about how to proceed. Scouts who place at least 32 monthly commuter calls are paid $25 each month, and the top 25 scouts each month are awarded additional prizes. Scouts who incur additional cell phone expense beyond their normal minutes packages are reimbursed by the network.

Many scouts feel a sense of accomplishment for turning their idle commuting time into a productive service of value to thousands of other commuters. The network strongly encourages scouts to pre-program the network’s hotline number into their wireless phones for one-touch dialing, and the use of hands free devices.

Once selected, each scout is very important to the network, as each one helps to paint a part of a continuously updated complete picture of Triangle traffic conditions. Scouts are free to end their service commitment at any time with notification to the network.

If you would like an application sent to you, please complete the online form below. Once you complete the online entry below, you can download an application (pdf file) to print, sign, and return, or click to have one mailed to you within a few days.
